Academically trained as a nuclear physicist, my passion for photography grew from a stint in 1970 as a darkroom assistant. While living in Virginia, I began working with a group of photographers who were producing a comprehensive study of the wildflowers that grew throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. The macro and extreme close-up photography appealed to my technical nature and eventually I began hiking and taking photographs throughout the Blue Ridge, traveling from the Shenandoah Valley to the Great Smokies.

Since those early days in Virginia, my photo career has taken me to all corners of the planet. After years of concentrating on the underwater world, I now spend much of my time capturing the natural history of the terrestrial world.
